Michigan State Football: What are chances to land 4-star S Jaylen Reed?
Four-star safety Jaylen Reed is getting ready to commit, but does Michigan State football have a chance to land the Detroit-native?
Recruiting has hit a roadblock for Michigan State under Mel Tucker. Is it because he’s not a great recruiter? Absolutely not, but rather because of a pandemic that’s kept everyone quarantined and campus visits and in-person recruiting is currently not a thing.
But that hasn’t stopped Tucker from putting in work remotely. He’s extending dozens of offers a week and has been working hard to land some big-time in-state prospects.
Jaylen Reed may be one of the biggest names on the Spartans’ recruiting board, ranked the No. 237 overall prospect and 10th-best safety in the country, according to the 247Sports composite. He’s a strong-bodied 6-foot-0, 190-pound safety who doesn’t shy away from contact and he’s a budding star at the prep level for Detroit (Mich.) King.
Michigan State got a visit from Reed right before the social distancing order went into place and the NCAA stopped in-person recruiting and that could help the Spartans here, but Penn State has been the favorite and continues to be.
According to everything the recruiting experts are saying, Penn State is a lock, but Reed likes what the new coaching staff looks like but that relationship might just be too fresh.
Reed is likely down to Penn State and Michigan State and one side has a longer-lasting relationship and the other has the hometown draw. Will he stay in Michigan and become the next King prospect to star at Michigan State and repair the Detroit-to-East Lansing relationship or will James Franklin pluck another prospect from the Spartans’ backyard?
Right now, I’d say all signs are pointing toward Penn State and I’d be shocked to see him end up in East Lansing even though Tucker has made up some serious ground over the past couple of months.
