1. Mel Tucker is an excellent recruiter

One area that Michigan State fans were underwhelmed with under Mark Dantonio since 2016 was recruiting. He was reeling in classes that were ranked anywhere between 20-50 and although the 2020 cycle was his worst in quite some time, he never truly excelled at bringing in the best recruits possible and lost a plethora of in-state battles with Michigan.

Heck, he even lost guys like DeAndre Square and Justin Rogers to Kentucky this year and Jaren Mangham to Tucker’s Buffaloes last cycle.

The Detroit-area is loaded with talent and even the state of Michigan in general, but Dantonio was swinging and missing on guys he would normally have landed after successful seasons. Going 7-6 in back-to-back seasons will do that to a program, especially when it’s a couple years removed from a 3-9 campaign.

That’s where Tucker will excel at Michigan State. Not only is he a strong recruiter who has proven that at Alabama and Georgia, but he could be bringing Kentucky’s top recruiter with him (Vince Marrow) as the two have been good friends for a while.

If Tucker can bring Marrow to East Lansing with him, it’ll be years of solid recruiting and we could be looking at regular top 25 classes.

Recruiting could help bring this program back in a hurry.
