2. Knowledge of Midwest recruiting

If there’s one guy who has been recruiting well against Michigan State and the Spartans for the past couple of years in the Midwest outside of the Power Five, it’s been Luke Fickell.

Fickell and Mark Dantonio have gone after some of the same recruits and often times, the young Cincinnati coach wins out. He beat out Dantonio for guys like Tavion Thomas, Malik Vann, Evan Prater, Jaheim Thomas, Justin Wodtly and even snagged Michigan State tight end Noah Davis in the transfer portal. He knows how to recruit the area.

A major reason for this Midwest success has been the fact that Fickell is from the state of Ohio, coached at Ohio State for a while and has developed relationships with the high school coaches in the region and that’s exactly what Dantonio has done.

Dantonio even stated he wants Michigan State to find a guy who can recruit the talent-rich region and Fickell can do just that.

In fact, he’s great at it, locking up the No. 40 class in the nation for 2020 which is higher than Michigan State’s group. He also landed the highest-rated recruit in Cincinnati history in Prater. He has the AAC’s No. 1 recruiting class for 2020 and just imagine what he could do with more resources in East Lansing.

No longer would we be talking about classes ranked from 30-40 but rather in the top 25.
