5. Matt Campbell, HC, Iowa State

File this one under “long-shot” but Matt Campbell would be an excellent hire for Michigan State considering he’s been one of the top young coaches in college football.

Not only that, but he turned a dormant program at Iowa State into a winner. In four seasons with the Cyclones, Campbell has compiled a 26-25 record with three straight bowl trips. He has done a lot with a program that had been known for 3-5 win seasons for a while and missed bowl games which is all you can really ask for. He’s exceeded expectations.

Before he took the Iowa State job, he was at Toledo and he’s originally from Ohio, so that could help with ties to the Buckeye State and he could be looking for a move closer to home.

Campbell has a $6 million buyout, though, and he has turned down other jobs in recent seasons to remain with the Cyclones. It would take a monster offer to lure him from Ames but anything is possible.

Michigan State would have to go all-in on this one to land Campbell.
