Expectations are through the roof for Michigan State basketball this season and here’s why the Spartans will live up to them and win the national title.

Tom Izzo is hungry for No. 2.

The Hall of Fame head coach has made it known that he doesn’t plan to stop coaching any time soon and that he is fighting for that elusive second national title. This year’s Michigan State team could be the one to bring it home to East Lansing and get the head coach one step closer to retirement — although I doubt he’d want to hang it up even after another title.

Michigan State is loaded this season and ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 for the first time in school history and the expectations and goals are as lofty as ever.

Why will the Spartans win it all in 2019-20? We’ve got you covered with five reasons.

5. No dominant teams in 2019-20

It’s safe to say that there’s no dominant team in college basketball this season. Michigan State starts the season No. 1 but who’s the clear No. 2 or even No. 3? Are there five teams that can be considered heads and shoulders above the rest? Not this year.

Last year you could have made the case for Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina and even a team like Gonzaga all making a run at the national title. They were all safe bets, but there’s no dominant team this season that the Spartans need to fear. The field is as wide open as it has ever been and that’s only a good thing for Michigan State.

Led by a veteran group with plenty of depth as well as young talent sprinkled in, Michigan State should be feared by the rest of the nation.

If there’s no dominant team, would that make Michigan State the favorite to win it all? In my opinion, yes. You usually bet on the teams with the experience and the playmakers at every position and Michigan State has just that.
