With the Michigan State basketball season finally upon us, what can we realistically expect the Spartans to accomplish in 2019-20?

Michigan State is on the brink of its opening tip. By being named preseason No. 1 team in the nation, many have this team going all the way in March. Along with that, the Spartans are expected to win the Big Ten title.

What can we truly expect this team to accomplish in 2019-20?

This season has State fans everywhere excited. This is the first season in which they have been named the preseason No. 1 team in school history. They have so much on the line.

This season they are looking to bring home Tom Izzo’s second national title. He has wanted this for a long time and this is the team to achieve such an accomplishment. If the Spartans can win it, Izzo would become the 15th coach to have two or more championships.

The Spartans are also looking for another regular season title which would give Izzo 10 in his career. They could also win the Big Ten Tournament which would be his seventh.

Izzo has done a fantastic job coaching his players getting them to give all they have. That is how he has so many accolades under his belt. He has taken teams to the Final Four eight times and some of those teams were thought to not even be tournament-worthy. He has had teams come up short before, though, as well. However, no team has appeared to have the heart and will to take it one day at a time like this team has.

Cassius Winston knows what this team can accomplish; he knows how good this team is. He has mentioned this to teammates and the media before that he is not trying to look ahead to March because there are too many games in between — they have to go out and show what they are capable of. He knows they need to take it one game and one day at a time and not to get cocky and to stay humble.

This is coming from the best point guard in the country who has every reason to be cocky. He came back because he saw what this team would be capable of and wanted to be part of it. He also knows he can get better. With as great a player he is, he is humble enough to say that there are still things he can improve on and wants to improve those things.

This season will be big for Cassius as well. Not only will this be his last year but he could be catapulted into a new category for NCAA players. He could be the first player to have 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in his college career. That would be quite something if he could pull that off. Even if Cassius cannot do that, he will still go down as one of MSU’s best players ever.

There are a lot of things this team can accomplish if they stay focused. We will have to wait and see how they execute when the regular season tips off.
