Michigan State football has lost yet another player to the NCAA transfer portal on Friday in fourth-string tight end Noah Davis.

Another week, another set of players entering the NCAA transfer portal. On Thursday, it was Cam Chambers who entered the portal and Noah Davis, a former three-star tight end from Ohio, followed suit on Friday.

While these players are leaving the program at an alarming rate, it makes sense that Michigan State is cutting some of the fat from deep on the depth chart — something it had been knocked for not doing in recent years.

Mark Dantonio had always been judged for not playing his best players because they may not have had the experience but he’s been doing that this season and he’s lost some third and fourth-stringers because of it.

Granted, a guy like Brandon Bouyer-Randle was a solid role player as were Connor Heyward and La’Darius Jefferson, but all of them had something in common: they had been losing playing time to younger players. In fact, Heyward and Jefferson lost carries to both Elijah Collins (who won the starting running back job) and Anthony Williams Jr. who was rising as the No. 2 back.

Bouyer-Randle was fighting for playing time, but the staff has been high on Chase Kline and Jeslord Boateng at linebacker and he’d be fighting for the starting job next season.

Chambers was surprisingly buried on the depth chart despite putting in the time and sticking it out with the program and Weston Bridges hadn’t seen the field at all this season and was undergoing a drastic position change from running back to receiver.

Davis was the team’s fourth-string tight end behind Matt Seybert, Matt Dotson and rising redshirt freshman Trenton Gillison. He had battled injuries throughout his Spartan career and saw just 32 offensive snaps this season.

Michigan State might be trimming some depth, but these are guys that haven’t seen much of the field this season and likely would have continued that trend next year.
