Michigan State Basketball: Meet Cassius Winston, the nation’s best player
By Nate Rhoades
Michigan State basketball’s Cassius Winston has just been voted, by a multitude coaches, as the best player in country for the 2019-20 season.
Cassius Winston was the topic of conversation as CBS recently just ran a candid coaches poll surveying more than 100 college basketball coaches. It posed the question of who is going to be the best player in college basketball this coming season. Winston blew his competition out of the water with 50 percent of the votes while the next-highest was Markus Howard with 13 percent.
So what is so special about Winston that coaches think he will be the best college player? He is not some overly athletic freak, he’s not tall or a physical specimen. He’s an elite point guard who can do everything on the floor which makes him the most valuable player in the nation and is why he will be college basketball’s best.
Winston was incredible last year. He would facilitate the floor like he owned the place. He even did this against top-ranked opponents like Duke in the Elite Eight and Michigan in Ann Arbor. It does not matter where this kid is playing, he will be the one with the ball in his hands directing his teammates where to be.
The senior point guard also has fantastic vision and feel for the game. He is one step ahead of everyone out on the court. He knows when to push the ball and make long pass to someone running the floor. He can pass the ball into tight spaces for his teammates to get the ball for an easy layup or dunk. He just knows when to get his teammates the ball to give them the position advantage.
Throughout his three years in East Lansing, he has broken the Spartan record for all-time assists with 290, shattering Mateen Cleaves’ previous record of 274. This is not only a school record but a Big Ten record as well.
Winston also is a scorer. He knows when to pull up for the long jumper or take it to the hole for the easy points and the and-one. He can do it all. Winston is on track to score over 2,000 points in his MSU career which will be the first Spartan to do that since Shawn Respert in 1995. He sits at 1,411 total points currently so if he averages 18.4 points a game, just like he did last season, he will accomplish this.
With all of the records Winston has already broken, he’s also on pace to be the first player in college basketball history to score 2,000 points and dish out 1,000 assists in his career. He needs to average 18.4 points a game to accomplish the points and would need to put up 8.9 assists per game in 2019-20.
Winston has already cemented himself as one of the best players to play under Izzo but could push himself even higher on that list.
One thing that would elevate him to the top is snagging another championship for the Spartans. Winston has the speed, strength and knowledge to take on anyone in the country and not back down. Winston is the best college basketball player and will continue to prove that throughout this season.
