Quarterback

Starting quarterback: Brian Lewerke
Backup: Rocky Lombardi

The most important position on the field will be led by — you guessed it — Brian Lewerke. The senior quarterback enters his final year in East Lansing with lofty expectations for himself while the fan base is still left wondering what happened in 2018.

Lewerke did suffer a shoulder injury and it was clear that he couldn’t even make a 5-10 yard throw on the money because the zip nor accuracy were there. He didn’t have the live arm he did as a sophomore in 2017 and that was concerning because backup Rocky Lombardi didn’t look a whole lot better — at least accuracy-wise.

Now that he’s fully healthy (100 percent, according to the quarterback himself) and coming off a strong spring and summer camp, he should get back to his 2017 ways and approach 3,000 yards with 20-plus touchdowns again. If he can do that while running the ball more than he did a year ago, the offense will take a major leap. He has the talent, but will he stay healthy?

Lombardi will be his backup and there’s talk that he’s turned the corner, knows the playbook better and has looked like a more complete quarterback in summer scrimmages. This is huge, especially when considering the Spartans need to replace Lewerke after the season.
