This one should go without saying, but Brian Lewerke’s name wouldn’t be on this list if he had a strong 2018 season. He broke out as a sophomore in 2017, passing for over 2,700 yards and 20 touchdowns but took a step back in 2018 with an injured shoulder and no confidence of which to speak.

Lewerke is arguably the main key to the Spartans’ success in 2019. If he has a 2017-type season, Michigan State could contend for a Big Ten title. If he struggles like he did in 2018, the Spartans will suffer another disappointing season.

The coaching staff has been optimistic this offseason and Mark Dantonio has been singing the praises of his senior quarterback. He has recovered from that shoulder injury and has dubbed himself “100 percent” which was evident in the spring game and a recent passing camp where Lewerke won the MVP award.

We have seen what Lewerke is capable of when he’s healthy. He could be one of the best dual-threats in Michigan State history and a top passer in the country.

If anyone on the offensive side of the ball needs to step up this season, it’s Lewerke — for the second time in his career.
