4. Tight end usage

It’s hard to fathom just how far the tight end position has fallen over the past few years, and no, I’m not talking about talent-wise.

Rather, I’m referencing the lack of production from this position which is due to play-calling and just the inability of Brian Lewerke to get on the same page as his tight ends. He has three solid players at the position heading into the 2019 season, but he needs to work on relying on these guys more to get the job done.

Matt Dotson is entering his third season with the Spartans and he has All-Big Ten talent. He’s an athletic tight end who struggled a bit with his confidence last season, but entering 2019 with the No. 1 role, he could finally break out.

Trenton Gillison will be a redshirt freshman and he’s another athletic tight end who fans are excited about. He has the frame, the hands and the strength to be a problem for opposing defenses.

Lastly, there’s Noah Davis who gets overlooked, but could be a solid contributor after missing the 2018 season.

With three solid targets at tight end, the offense needs to take advantage.
