Michigan State Football: Staff should gauge interest from 4-star QB Malik Hornsby
After he de-committed from North Carolina, should Michigan State football make a push for four-star dual-threat quarterback Malik Hornsby?
One of the best quarterbacks in the 2020 class is back on the market as four-star dual-threat Malik Hornsby de-committed from Mack Brown and North Carolina.
While he may seem like a long-shot as one of the top-100 recruits in the class and fourth-best dual-threat, according to 247Sports, and because he didn’t list the Spartans in his top eight before he committed to the Tar Heels back in May, but the staff offered him late which means they could get another run at the four-star.
Hornsby is a Texas-native and the staff has tested the market in the Lone Star State in recent years, but hasn’t had major success with elite talent — which Hornsby qualifies as.
The Spartans offered Hornsby back in February and released a top schools list in April before committing in May. If the staff gauges his interest and can get him on campus to take that open quarterback position in the 2020 class, that would be one of the biggest wins in the Mark Dantonio era — on the recruiting trail.
Like I said before, it’s a long-shot but it’d definitely be worth exploring since the Spartans have missed on Michael Alaimo and No. 1 target at quarterback Chubba Purdy, leaving CJ Stroud as the top remaining option.
Add Hornsby to the mix and the Spartans could have to great options instead of putting all eggs in one basket like they did with Purdy.
Hornsby is ranked the No. 84 recruit in the class and had a top eight of Florida State, Auburn, Oregon, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas A&M, SMU and Houston. Will he decide to stay close to home or will he give the Spartans a shot? The staff needs to find out.
