Michigan State Basketball: Kenny Goins gets shot with Nuggets
Former Michigan State basketball walk-on Kenny Goins has officially agreed to play in the NBA Summer League for the Denver Nuggets.
Zion Williamson’s worst nightmare has come true as Kenny Goins is joining the Western Conference with him — in the NBA Summer League.
On Friday evening, Going agreed to a deal which will make him part of the Nuggets’ Summer League team and give him an opportunity to make a roster or at least compete for a two-way contract before the 2019-20 season.
You have to applaud what Goins has done in his college career. He went from unknown recruiting commodity to walk-on, playing a role on scout team for the Final Four-bound Spartans in 2015. He then earned more playing time, and eventually a scholarship, and became a crucial member of another Final Four team in his senior year.
Goins was a leader on and off the court for the Big Ten regular season and tournament champs and became one of the most consistent shooters on the team.
Though he went cold near the end of the season and into the NCAA Tournament, he was the reason Michigan State was able to overcome losses of Josh Langford, Nick Ward and Kyle Ahrens. He could do a little of everything: shoot, defend, facilitate and rebound.
While he might be too much of a “tweener” in the NBA, he could be a decent small forward with a little more emphasis on his offensive game.
Goins will look to terrorize Williamson and the rest of the rookie class in the Summer League. All jokes aside, this is a major opportunity for a kid who has quite literally started from the bottom.
