1. Opportunity to contend for starting job immediately

With Brian Lewerke set to graduate following the 2019 season, that leaves a void under center that won’t easily be filled. He has Rocky Lombardi as the presumed replacement for when he departs, but there have been questions raised about his ability to lead the offense after a couple of shaky performances in 2018.

Behind Lombardi will be two unproven commodities in Theo Day and Payton Thorne. While both of these guys has the talent to compete for the starting job, the race could be wide open for 2020.

If Chubba Purdy wants to play right away, his best chance to do that might be in East Lansing. There will be no solidified No. 1 so he could follow in his brother’s footsteps and become a freshman starter for a Power Five program.

There could very well be a transfer out of the program next season as well if Purdy commits and immediately enters the race for the starting job.
