Michigan State Football: 5 reasons Chubba Purdy should commit to Spartans
3. Purdy is a perfect fit for the offense’s direction
There’s a clear direction the staff wants to go in when talking about the offense. While pro-style quarterbacks have been the norm for the Spartans, Mark Dantonio has favored some dual-threat passers in recent years which started with Keith Nichol who eventually molded into a receiver.
Dantonio gave Damion Terry a shot but he never lived up to the hype and then Brian Lewerke was the go-to guy and brought the offense back from the brink after an ugly 2016 campaign. He accounted for over 3,000 yards of total offense in 2017 and was an All-Big Ten talent.
Despite a down 2018 season for the junior quarterback, Dantonio stated he wanted to stick with Lewerke because of his upside and dual-threat ability.
Lewerke’s backup, too, is a dual-threat but Rocky Lombardi may not be as pure of a passer — he does have a rocket for an arm, though.
The staff wants a guy who can make something happen with his legs and Chubba Purdy would be the perfect fit for the Michigan State scheme.
