This is the risk the staff wanted to take with Michael Alaimo still on the board. It seemed like they were in good standing with the New Jersey-native and four-star pro-style passer, but wanted to take a chance on pursuing four-star dual-threat Chubba Purdy as the No. 1 option.

In the past, the staff would have taken the sure thing over the higher-rated kid who is far from a lock, but maybe times are changing in the Mark Dantonio era. In order to compete with the big boys consistently, you have to recruit program-changing recruits and Purdy seems to be just that.

Purdy has a cannon for an arm and plenty of speed. He has no problem going through his progressions quickly and when he sees nothing open, he’s one of the best running quarterbacks in the 2020 class.
