Is Michigan State football’s coaching staff taking a risk in the 2020 recruiting class by prioritizing four-star quarterback Chubba Purdy?

Sometimes in recruiting, you have to take risks. There’s always going to be a player who is valued above another and in Michigan State football’s case, that may have been the situation with the quarterback position.

Michael Alaimo was looked at as one of the top options for the Spartans and they offered him which immediately turned into a visit from the four-star gunslinger from New Jersey.

At one point, he seemed like the clear No. 1 option for the Spartans under center, and then they targeted multiple other passers in the 2020 class, highlighted by four-star dual-threat Chubba Purdy from Gilbert, Ariz. He also happens to be the younger brother of Iowa State star Brock Purdy who broke out in the Big 12 as a true freshman.

Even after Alaimo’s visit to East Lansing, the interest from both sides seemed to be very high, but there was no rumor of a commitment or the staff pushing for one.

That’s what made the Purdy offer seem like a more important one than originally thought. Maybe he was the guy the staff wanted after evaluating more film? His highlights stick out as some of the most impressive you’re going to see from a high school quarterback, so the move makes sense, but is this too big of a risk?

That risk took on new life on Wednesday as Alaimo — who probably didn’t want to wait around for the staff to make up its mind on who they wanted — committed to Purdue shortly after taking an official visit to West Lafayette. He’s off the board which means the staff is likely all-in on Purdy.

Mark Dantonio must feel incredibly confident in his chances to land Purdy, because he just let one of the top quarterbacks in the class pick another Big Ten school — that may come back to haunt him, especially if Purdy lands elsewhere.

If the risk does pay off, Michigan State could land one of the best quarterback prospects it’s had in a long time. Purdy is a game-changer with elite athleticism and a rocket arm and he could contend for a starting job almost immediately. We’ll soon find out if the risk was worth it.
