The frustrations surrounding the tight end position were deafening in 2018, especially because the talent was there. Matt Sokol was coming off a career year and looked to be the senior leader there, but he played poorly and dropped a plethora of passes while just looking lost while he was on the field.

That set the bar relatively low for Matt Dotson, a former four-star tight end with lofty expectations, but he didn’t quite have the year for which he was hoping.

In fact, Dotson finished with 14 catches for 159 yards and a touchdown, leading all tight ends, but he dropped too many passes and didn’t quite have the same connection with Brian Lewerke as he did with backup quarterback Rocky Lombardi. The lack of targets and chemistry between him and Lewerke was disappointing, but we saw what he was capable of when Lombardi was in.

It’s time for Dotson to prove just why he was rated so high out of high school and sought after by dozens of top programs. He needs to have a big year at the tight end position.
