Michigan State Football: Dashaun Mallory has bright future at DT
In our 100 days until kickoff series, we take a look at the future of Michigan State football’s defensive tackle position with Dashaun Mallory.
We are officially under 90 days until Michigan State football returns, so we are counting down with a player profile for every number on the roster, continuing with No. 94, Dashaun Mallory.
The former three-star defensive tackle recruit from Bollingbrook, Ill., committed to Michigan State late in the recruiting process after calling it his “dream program”. He provided an instant upgrade to the defensive line in the 2018 class and looked to have an immediate impact for the Spartans, but no one expected the defensive line to be as deep and dominant as it was.
Mallory didn’t record a single tackle or statistic in 2018, but he did retain that redshirt, making him a freshman, on the football field, in 2019.
The Illinois-native was named the Scout Team Defensive Player of the Week two times, though, showing that he can contend for meaningful snaps, but the staff felt it was in everyone’s best interest if he redshirted and came back in 2019 with four years of eligibility in front of him.
With a 6-foot-1, 314-pound frame, he has the size to replace a Raequan Williams or Mike Panasiuk when they graduate and he has that strength as well. He was impressive on tape out of high school as he dominated opposing linemen and he seemed to have carried that over last season as a member of the scout team.
Mallory’s future on the defensive line is bright and while he might not be given a chance to start in 2019 with both tackles back, he could be in line to earn a No. 1 job in 2020.
Worried about losing Williams and Panasiuk following the 2019 season? Don’t — the defensive tackle position is in good hands with Mallory.
