Michigan State Football: 10 post-spring bold predictions for 2019 season
1. Spartans earn New Year’s Day bowl bid
It’s been a few years since Michigan State has been able to say it played in a New Year’s Day (or eve) bowl game. In fact, you’d have to go all the way back to 2015 when the Spartans faced Alabama on New Year’s Eve in the Cotton Bowl of the College Football Playoff.
Before that, it was 2014 when they saw Baylor in the Cotton Bowl and then 2013 when the Spartans faced Stanford in the Rose Bowl. After a decent stretch, Michigan State’s bowl bids have run cold.
The Holiday Bowl in 2017 was on Dec. 28, so it was just shy of the coveted New Year’s Day slate, but 2019 will yield better results. After winning nine games in the regular season, the Spartans will get some respect from the bowl committee. Will it be the Outback Bowl? Maybe the Citrus Bowl? A New Year’s Six bowl would be unlikely after a 9-3 campaign, but not impossible.
No matter how it gets done, the Spartans will earn a more impressive bowl bid than they’ve gotten over the past two years.
Book those plane tickets for the new year because the Spartans will be playing their postseason game on the first day 2020.
