Michigan State football extended another quarterback offer to three-star CJ Stroud from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., on Monday.

Just weeks after offering a guy who looked to be ‘the quarterback’ in Michigan State’s 2020 class, Mark Dantonio went out west and put CJ Stroud on the radar.

The three-star dual-threat from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., may not have thought about moving to the Midwest to play college ball, but things may have changed. He received what he dubbed a “huge offer” from Michigan State on Monday.

What does this mean for the 2020 class’ potential quarterback? Actually, a lot.

While I still believe Michael Alaimo is the Spartans’ main guy, Dantonio and Co. are not shy about wanting options. They may be in good shape with Alaimo, but they’ve seen in years past, as recently as 2019, that the top quarterback option doesn’t always stick — Dwan Mathis looked like a lock until he de-committed, picked Ohio State and then signed with Georgia in the end.

Nothing in recruiting is a given anymore, so Michigan State isn’t going to put all of its eggs in one basket, which sheds more light the Stroud offer.

On top of that, Stroud is an impressive dual-threat quarterback.

Stroud seems like a late-riser in the 2020 class. He can fit passes into tight spaces and he never truly gets rattled in the pocket and escapes pressure with ease. He makes Kyles Murray-like plays with his legs and arm and even has a solid 6-foot-2.5, 194-pound frame — some sites even have him listed as 6-foot-4.

If Michigan State is going to push for Stroud, it’ll need to get him to campus as soon as possible, potentially for a game this fall. The No. 522 player in the class and 15th-best dual-threat, per 247Sports, has been blowing up lately and is up to over a dozen offers. This will be a tough battle to reel him from the West Coast.
