3. Defensive backfield is loaded

If there’s one thing that impressed more than the defensive line during the spring game, it had to be the depth in the defensive backfield. It seemed like the Spartans had endless combinations to send out there, making life miserable for Theo Day and Rocky Lombardi.

Josiah Scott finished with an interception which shouldn’t surprise anyone, but Josh Butler looked solid, Kalon Gervin stepped up, Xavier Henderson looked the part and David Dowell played well. Behind them were a number of second-teamers who looked more than ready to step in.

Gervin was my pick for the breakout performer of the game, but we also saw Tre Person, Shakur Brown, Christian Jackson and Dominique Long get some valuable reps.

If you’re looking for a position group that’s absolutely loaded, look no further than the defensive backfield which seems to have just reloaded even with the losses of Khari Willis and Justin Layne.
