Michigan State Basketball: Where is former Spartan Delvon Roe now?
By Nate Rhoades
Remember Delvon Roe? Where is the former Michigan State basketball star now? We take a look at where he is in his new career.
Many Michigan State fans haven’t heard this name in years: Delvon Roe. Sure, he left the program early, but diehard fans know that he departed not because he was done with basketball but because he physically could not play anymore because of a growing knee problem.
The Ohio-native had knee issues throughout his three seasons and he just physically could not go any longer. He left because he had to and not because he wanted to. Leaving early helped his career in the long-run because instead of trying to balance two things, basketball and acting, he was able to just focus on the latter.
Roe started his career as a Spartan in 2008-09. He was an impact freshmen from the get-go, averaging 18 minutes per game. He was also put on the All-Big Ten Freshman team. Roe was a complete stud and was the only freshman to start in the national championship game where the Spartans ended up losing to the Tar Heels.
In his next two seasons as a Spartan, he averaged 6.4 points and 5.0 rebounds and 6.1 points and 5.0 rebounds, respectively. He also had an average of 1.2 blocks per game in his junior season. However, with the pain of his knee consistently being bothersome, he made the decision that his basketball career would be over on September 29, 2011.
With his basketball career over, Roe focused on acting. He was not always into acting, though. He did not come into college in the theatre department. In fact, Roe started off in criminal justice and fell in love with acting because of two introductory level classes he had to take his freshmen year.
In this class, he did not see the potential he had, however, his teacher did. After reciting a monologue his professor asked if he would stay after class to talk and from there his professor encouraged him to take up acting because he had some huge potential. As the year progressed, Roe kept getting the same feedback and some continued to say he had to give acting a shot and to try out for the theatre program the following year.
Roe continued to be hesitant and did not see much in himself at the time but he gave in and eventually tried and and changed his major to theatre. He is now becoming a Hollywood star because of his change in majors.
How this started was while he was a theatre student and still on the basketball team, there was one night he had a performance before a basketball game. He got dressed and did his lines he was cast for and he also had an awesome fight scene which he had to partake in.
Once his parts were through, he rushed out before the play was completely over and ran over to make it to the Breslin Center before the tip. He killed it in both performances. In the basketball game, he ended the win over South Carolina with 15 points and six assists.
Along with this epic performance, during the game, they cast parts of the play which Roe was in just hours before. This is where his life had changed because when ESPN played parts of the play and director by the name of Danny Mooney who just happened to be watching as the played these scenes. Mooney had then reached out to the young basketball star and wanted to work with him. He told Roe to try and audition for the new movie he had been working on and he did. Roe was eventually cast for a role in Love and Honor with Liam Hemsworth.
Roe has continued to take on acting roles since his days at MSU have passed him. The newest project he is working on his a BET series “Games People Play”. He has not mentioned much about his role and has said his character has secrets of his own but he has enjoyed working on this project. He will be seen in five of the ten episodes to air. His character is an NBA star who is best friends with the main character. You can see Roe in his new role on Tuesday nights on BET.
