Michigan State Football: 5 players who improved stock in 2019 spring game
It feels as if Darrell Stewart Jr. has been in East Lansing forever, but he’s never put a full season together. It’s not that he doesn’t have the potential, but he’s always had to split targets with NFL-caliber receivers, most notably Felton Davis III.
Now that Davis III is off to the NFL, he’ll be the presumed No. 2 target behind Cody White and if the spring game was any indication, he could slide into that No. 1 role. Both guys are more than capable of garnering each opposing defense’s top cornerback, but Stewart Jr. was definitely the top performer on Saturday.
Did he need to improve his stock? Not necessarily, but he proved that he’s capable of being that go-to receiver for the Spartans.
On the day, he finished with three big catches and two touchdowns — one was a 10-yard reception from Brian Lewerke and the other a 31-yard catch from Rocky Lombardi.
Clearly he’s on the same page with both quarterbacks and he is as sure-handed as anyone on the team.
