Mark Dantonio is fortunate he was able to retain the redshirt on former four-star Detroit Cass Tech star Kalon Gervin in 2018.

Gervin came in with high expectations but didn’t quite see the field as much as he would have hoped. That’s what happens when the cornerback position is absolutely loaded with future NFL stars and even the guys who sat third on the depth chart had starting potential.

The freshman actually entered with a solid cornerback class with Davion Williams and Christian Jackson and there’s a good chance he’ll be starting alongside one of those two in a year or two.

During the spring game, though, the redshirt freshman had a breakout performance as it seemed like he was everywhere and broke up passes intended for both Cody White and Jalen Nailor. He didn’t back down from certain matchups and looked like he belonged. He had the look of a future star in the MSU defensive backfield.

Michigan State has yet another rising star at cornerback and he’ll likely be in the two-deep this season after impressive this spring.
