3. Secondary didn’t miss beat without Layne, Willis

This is one of those position groups that fans were excited to see because of departures in Justin Layne at cornerback and Khari Willis at safety.

Everyone had to feel good about the secondary, especially since it looked like the ‘No Fly Zone’ that was anticipated heading into the season. Josiah Scott lived up to the hype with an interception which he ripped from the arms of Brandon Sowards and guys like Christian Jackson, Josh Butler, Kalon Gervin, Xavier Henderson, Tre Person, Shakur Brown, Michael Dowell and Dominique Long all made plays.

Gervin was especially impressive as he was targeted multiple times and got his arm in on some passes intended for Cody White. He didn’t back down from the battle against MSU’s No. 1 receiver.

The depth is eye-opening in the secondary and it shows that there won’t be much of a drop-off, if any, from 2018.

A couple of big plays in the passing game were given up, but that was more on Brian Lewerke making solid throws and his receivers running good routes.
