Michigan State Basketball: 5 takeaways from Final Four-clinching win over Duke
2. Cassius Winston has become a Spartan legend
Social media can be a scary place these days and terms like “GOAT” or “legend” are floated around quite a bit. Cassius Winston has been dubbed a ‘legend’ and even the ‘GOAT’ many times this season as he marched his way to a Big Ten Player of the Year award and a couple of Big Ten titles, but clearly it was just a term used for a talented player who happened to be Michigan State’s star.
Was Cassius really a legend? Not exactly because he hadn’t truly done anything big-time like win a national title or national player of the year award, but he was well on his way.
After leading an ailing Michigan State team to the Final Four during a season that looked to be lost after Josh Langford’s injury, it seems almost wrong not to call Winston a Spartan legend.
In fact, let’s make it official.
Cassius has become a Michigan State legend by breaking Mateen Cleaves’ single-season assist record, winning personal awards and leading a team that no one gave a chance to the Final Four with a good chance to win it all. He makes everyone around him better and he’s been spectacular all season long.
If Michigan State wins the national title, there’ll be quite the debate about who Tom Izzo’s best point guard ever is.
