Michigan State Holiday Wish List 2018: Wish No. 6 for Spartan fans
By Ryan Kay
Michigan State’s 25 wishes list continues today and throughout this week. What is the No. 6 wish for all Spartan fans?
Here is wish No. 6 on our Michigan State fan wish list as we count down to wish No. 1.
Wish No. 6
The football and basketball teams to not have any major injuries in 2019.
Some may argue that injuries are inevitable from season to season. However, it seems that Michigan State basketball and especially this years, Spartan football team have seen their fair share of injuries. I’m not talking about tweaking an ankle and missing the rest of the game like Nick Ward this season; I’m talking about some of the injuries that the football team has had to endure which had major contributors miss four or more games or the entire season.
I’m not even talking about the Brian Lewerke-type of injuries in which he for example played even though it appeared he was suffering aches and pains in his right shoulder for what seemed to be for almost the entire season. Let’s look at the past history of Spartan injuries first to put it all in perspective.
First we will look at the famous Michigan State basketball injury as most Spartans simply call the “stress fracture” injury. Head coach Tom Izzo once said, “That was an over-used, over-worked injury, and you’re seeing more of those stress fracture breaks.”
It started back in the fall of 1999 when Mateen Cleaves suffered a stress fracture in his right foot in which he missed the first 13 games of the season. Most recently, Kyle Ahrens missed the entire season last year after suffering a stress fracture prior to the season in which it eventually got worse thus him having to have surgery once again.
The list of Spartan basketball players who suffered stress fractures is long and here is to wishing for zero stress fractures or any other injuries to Michigan State basketball players in 2019.
The issue of injuries however is more prevalent and wide spread among members of the football team.
The Michigan State football team, as well, has had a ton of injuries. USA Today compiled a list with dates and length of Michigan State football player’s current injuries from this season. The list doesn’t include those players such as the offensive linemen I wrote about or the wide receivers like Cody White and Darrell Stewart Jr., among others. Starting running back L.J. Scott was limited to four games this regular season and numerous amounts of backups were even injured for periods of time. The Detroit Free Press even compiled a timeline and the number of games and players who were injured during the season.
The whole point is that if Michigan State was healthy this season, they could of easily won 10 games like last season. That seemed probable but there are no guarantees that it would have happened.
However, we can wish for great health which in turn may lead to great success in 2019. Only time will tell and Spartan fans look forward to the possibility of seeing a healthy Michigan State football team compete in 2019. Fans of the green and white are also hoping that the members of the basketball team will stay healthy on their quest to a Big Ten Championship and more.
In 2019, both the football and basketball teams for Michigan State team can be the best teams in the Big Ten when all is said and done. They must avoid injuries in order for that to happen. We have seen the basketball team loss to UConn in the Elite Eight in 2014 due to a key injury derailing their chance to win a national championship.
We recently saw the devastation of injuries to the football team this season prevent the Spartans from competing for a Big Ten title. However, both teams must stay healthy overall and must use have a little luck on their side moving forward.
As we inch that much nearer to the top five wishes on our way to Wish No. 1, expect the wishes to be about what the Spartan fan base truly desires and needs moving forward to 2019. Now, let’s explain how this wish has a little bit more to deal with luck of it coming true.
