Michigan State football is trending for three-star quarterback Payton Thorne from Naperville, Ill., who is committed to Western Michigan.

Ever since Dwan Mathis decommitted from Michigan State, the Spartans have been flipping back and forth between finishing the 2019 class with a quarterback or just waiting until 2020 and going an entire cycle without one.

However, the Spartans have been putting forth the effort to garner a commitment from a quarterback in the class, aiming for three-star Payton Thorne, a Western Michigan pledge.

Michigan State recently offered the three-star from Naperville, Ill., on Dec. 4, he took an official to Western Michigan three days later and then took a trip to East Lansing on Dec. 10. There has been some talk of a flip from the Broncos to the Spartans and the Crystal Ball on 247Sports is trending toward the green and white.

In fact, the Crystal Ball reads 80 percent to Michigan State and 20 percent to NC State and the last handful of predictions have been in favor of the Spartans.

The Spartans seem to have a good idea of what they’re going to hear from the three-star as there’s talk that he will be making his final decision this week. All the Crystal Ball flips have to make fans feel better about finishing the 2019 class with a decent quarterback.

Compared to Mathis, 247Sports has Thorne ranked even higher on their list of quarterbacks. In fact, the former MSU pledge is listed as the No. 802 prospect and 23rd-best pro-style quarterback and Thorne is No. 580 overall and the 16th-best dual-threat.
