Michigan State Basketball: 5 takeaways from blowout win over Iowa
4. Cassius Winston’s impact goes far beyond scoring
You truly cannot measure the impact of Cassius Winston, but he was responsible for dozens of points, including eight of his own.
Winston’s eight points are about half his season average, but even on a night when he isn’t making his shots — going 3-for-11 from the field — he had arguably the biggest impact on the Michigan State win, dishing 12 assists to just one turnover.
So far in two Big Ten games, Winston has one total turnover — that’s unheard of. He’s being smart with the ball in his hands and his court vision is incredible. In those two games, he’s averaging 15 points, nine assists and 0.5 turnovers — those are All-American type numbers.
Michigan State has been using him a ton because of Foster Loyer’s slow development and will continue to play him 30-35 minutes per game.
That’s quite alright with Tom Izzo, though, as this may be his best point guard since Kalin Lucas.
