Michigan State basketball could soon learn its fate with Vernon Carey and Isaiah Stewart, but Tom Izzo is going all-in on five-star guard Anthony Edwards.

Making the decision to reclassify from 2020 to 2019, Anthony Edwards set himself up for a whirlwind of attention. The five-star shooting guard was one of the top-five recruits in 2020, but reclassified and became the No. 1 prospect in 2019 — and Michigan State expressed interest.

Well, Edwards actually surprised some people when he mentioned Michigan State as one of the programs he’d like to visit officially in the coming months.

The nation’s No. 1 recruit was looking at potentially joining a program in East Lansing which already had a four-star top-35 commitment in Rocket Watts, but since he never inked his Letter of Intent in the early signing period, a door may have opened.

Watts still says he’s “100 percent” committed to Michigan State and the talk is that he plans to sign in the spring, but the door has been slightly cracked, giving way to a potential spot for a guy like Edwards to join Malik Hall and — hopefully — a combo of Isaiah Stewart, Trayce Jackson-Davis or Vernon Carey.

Tom Izzo is showing that he’s all-in on trying to land Edwards, as he paid him a visit on Saturday.

Izzo is smart enough to realize that Watts could very well decide he wants to play elsewhere, opening up a spot he didn’t think would be vacant. It’s happened to him before where he’s missed out on his top options and he needed to have a backup plan.

I wouldn’t exactly call Edwards a backup plan since he’s the No. 1 player in the nation, but it can’t hurt to court him and see where Watts’ head is later on.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound shooting guard from Atlanta has one of the most complete games of any guard in the class and his frame is college-ready. Izzo is all-in right now, even though he has plenty of ground to make up.
