The newest No. 1 recruit in the class of 2019, a reclassified Anthony Edwards, is showing major interest in Michigan State basketball.

There’s a new No. 1 recruit in college basketball’s 2019 class and it’s not Vernon Carey Jr. While Michigan State is aiming to land Carey Jr., arguably the top big man recruit in the country, the Spartans could look to add five-star shooting guard Anthony Edwards who just reclassified from 2020 and took over the top spot.

It may not be a name Spartan fans are familiar with because the 2019 class is still far from over, but Edwards, an Atlanta, Ga., prospect, made the switch to 2019, shaking up the entire outlook of the cycle — especially for Michigan State.

Tom Izzo already has Malik Hall signed and is waiting for Rocket Watts to ink his LOI in the early period (time is running out), but he could soon be getting a visit from Edwards.

According to Evan Daniels of 247Sports, Edwards, who had just decided to reclassify, admitted his interest in Michigan State and has decided he will take an official visit.

"“I don’t have any [official visit] dates yet, but I know for sure I’m going to set up visit for Florida State and Michigan State,” Edwards said. “I haven’t decided about the other three.”"

Per his 247Sports page, he doesn’t have an offer yet, but I’d expect that to change, especially with an official visit being set up.

There seems to be legitimate interest here and it’s usually the top-tier recruits who reach out to programs when there is interest which is good news for the Spartans.

Edwards has a strong frame and is explosive off the dribble, but he also has a nice mid-range and 3-point jump shot. He looks to be college ready and he’d be the perfect addition to Michigan State’s 2019 class with Watts, Hall and potentially one of Carey Jr., Isaiah Stewart and Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Keep an eye on this recruitment as it’s just starting to heat up. Edwards has nice things to say about Izzo and Michigan State and that could turn into a heated battle for his services.
