Michigan State Basketball: Report card for win over Louisiana-Monroe
Offense: C
Yes, Michigan State scored 80 points, but that’s not indicative of just how poorly the Spartans shot the ball.
Need examples? Michigan State looked like it did against Syracuse in the round of 32 a season ago — flashbacks, I know — and made just 6-of-29 shots from 3-point range. It seemed like the offense was just settling for the long-range shot instead of trying to work it into the post — that’ll happen when Nick Ward is out.
Matt McQuaid was held scoreless and 0-for-6 from the field, Kenny Goins was 1-for-7 and Cassius Winston was red-hot in the second half but still finished just 9-of-22 from the field and 3-for-10 from downtown.
Michigan State also wasn’t passing the ball all that well, dishing just 13 total assists one game after finishing with 33. The Spartans did, however, cut down on turnovers, coughing the ball up a grand total of seven times.
The offense struggled all night but still found a way to reach 80 points and that was thanks to Winston and Josh Langford.
