4. Improbable victory in Ann Arbor
Did you expect a win in 2017? Not many people did, and for good reason. Going into the game, Michigan was ranked No. 7 in the country, playing at home and coming off a win in 2016 which seemed to change the tide in the rivalry.
Everything looked to be working against the Spartans, but luckily Michigan had John O’Korn starting under center — that truly worked in the Spartans’ favor.
Michigan State crossed the goal-line first, taking a 7-3 lead after a gutsy touchdown run, and dive, by Brian Lewerke. Madre London then scored on a screen pass right before half to give the Spartans a 14-3 lead, something no one had imagined heading into the game.
A downpour, handful of turnovers and only one Michigan touchdown later and Michigan State was storming off the field and back to East Lansing with the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
Michigan State’s defense was strong and shut down the Wolverines’ pass-heavy attack, leading to its eighth win in 10 years.
