Michigan State basketball has a distinct advantage in the battle for five-star small forward Keion Brooks. What is working in Tom Izzo’s favor?

The 2019 recruiting class has gotten off to a sluggish start, but Tom Izzo and Michigan State are heating things up with a number of five-star targets still on the board.

Izzo has already lured five-star combo guard Rocket Watts who is originally from Detroit, but that may be the only in-state prospect going green in this class.

Who could Izzo be after if it’s not any in-state kids? Five-star small forward Keion Brooks could be at the top of his board along with fellow five-stars Vernon Carey Jr., Trayce Jackson-Davis and Isaiah Stewart — don’t forget four-star Malik Hall.

Brooks, who Izzo has been recruiting since he was a fresh high school prospect, just gave the Spartans a key advantage in his recruitment, revealed on Tuesday evening.

According to Brian Snow of 247Sports, Brooks will be making his last official visit to Michigan State in mid-November.

Getting that last official visit is more important than people realize because it leaves a lasting impression in the recruit’s mind. The last thing he will be thinking about before he makes his decision is that trip he took to East Lansing in mid-November to close out his recruitment.

It’s worth mentioning that many experts believe the Spartans are right there at the top for his services and may even have a slight lead again. He would fit right in with the Spartans’ 2019 class and could join forces with Watts as two guys who can play on the perimeter and score in any which way.

Brooks has a top-six of North Carolina, Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky, UCLA and the Spartans. He has taken officials already to Indiana and UCLA and will be in Kentucky this coming weekend followed by a trip to North Carolina on Nov. 2. Getting this last visit on Nov. 16 is key in his recruitment and could play in the Spartans’ favor.
