Northwestern and Michigan State football will be facing off in a big Week 6 battle. Can the Spartans get back on track against the Wildcats?

Is Michigan State headed toward a disastrous season? It could all be decided on Saturday afternoon as Northwestern comes to town. The Spartans must take care of the Wildcats to avoid full-blown panic mode with a shaky 3-2 start to the year.

A win over Northwestern would be big for many reasons. The Spartans must beat the Wildcats to realistically remain in the Big Ten East title hunt — especially with Ohio State playing at such a high level. Brian Lewerke and the offense must get back on track to truly prove a turnaround is evident.

Michigan State could use a near-perfect showing against Northwestern after a sluggish start to the 2018 season.

5. Michigan State averages over 5.0 yards per rush

Am I beating a dead horse? Probably, but I truly believe that the running backs on Michigan State’s roster are talented enough to mask the problems on the offensive line.

Michigan State has LJ Scott, La’Darius Jefferson, Connor Heyward and Weston Bridges, so something has to give. Plus, the offensive line has to figure things out and get healthy sooner or later, so why not against the Wildcats?

The Spartans are going to surpass the 150-yard mark on the game and they’ll do so with a yards per carry average of over five. Not only will Scott be back, approaching the 100-yard mark, but Heyward, Jefferson and Bridges will add some impressive runs of their own.

Don’t sleep on Brian Lewerke, either, as he’ll have a long touchdown run, his third rushing score in the past two games.

Michigan State has averaged just 3.3 yards per rush on the year, but we’ll see a mark of at least five against Northwestern.
