4. LJ Scott, run game get back on track

I’ve been predicting this one for a while, but there’s just too much depth and talent in the backfield to be held to just over 100 yards per game and only 3.3 yards per carry.

LJ Scott will get healthy again and play against Northwestern, having his first 100-yard game of the season and guys like La’Darius Jefferson, Connor Heyward and Weston Bridges will each have career games in their own rights throughout the month. If you think the run game has no hope, you’ll be pleasantly surprised in October.

Though the Spartans are facing some tougher foes this month, Penn State has struggled mightily on defense, at times, and Northwestern isn’t great against the run, allowing over 140 yards per game.

Purdue, too, has been mediocre against the run and the Spartans will get three of those opponents at home. Mark Dantonio will make the home fans happy, getting that run game going to set up the pass. The offense will see a major uptick this month.
