3. Brian Lewerke needs his confidence back

It’s been a couple games since we saw the real Brian Lewerke take the field. Over the past two contests, he’s been shaky with his accuracy and he’s made some questionable throws into tight windows.

That was the case yet again as he finished the game 16-for-25 with 185 yards and an interception. He claims his interception in the end zone (a growing theme) was a pass interference on Felton Davis III, but the truth of the matter is that he missed a wide open receiver in the flat and he targeted his senior wide out just a tad late. The pick was on him, interference or not.

Lewerke needs to get his mojo back or the Spartans are going to have a long season. The same thing happened last year after a slow start, but he settled in after the Notre Dame game and finished the season strong. He’ll need to start his turnaround against Northwestern this week.

Through four games, Lewerke has five touchdown passes and five interceptions — that’s not acceptable.

Though he did pick up 39 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, he was clearly off all day long and didn’t exactly look comfortable in the pocket.

Michigan State goes as its leader at quarterback goes.
