3. Work on red-zone offense

Teams practice red-zone offense all the time, but the Spartans seem to have lost a handle on what it takes to score when they’re close to the finish line.

Michigan State’s red-zone offense has been on step above pathetic over the past two weeks and a reason for that has to be the play-calling, but also the execution hasn’t been all that great. The Spartans will get down to the 5-yard-line and run two straight run plays for no gain and then try to pass and it falls apart.

Take the opener, for example. Multiple times the Spartans got inside the 5-yard-line and came away with field goals instead of easy touchdowns.

The same happened against Arizona State, but the Spartans didn’t come away with a field goal, but rather Brian Lewerke threw an interception in the end zone.

Blocking has been poor, play-calling has been bland and execution has been lacking. Time to get the red-zone offense clicking again.
