2. Brian Lewerke for Heisman

While most reactions from a tight win against a presumed inferior foe will be negative, there are some who may have overreacted in a positive way concerning Brian Lewerke.

The junior quarterback was one of the lone bright spots on Friday night and he passed for 287 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. His pick was returned for a touchdown so it hurt tenfold, but he was more than solid the rest of the game.

Despite running for his life almost every time he dropped back, Lewerke was able to make play after play, finishing with a near-300 yard performance through the air and another 31 rushing yards — it would have been over 50 rushing yards if not for the sacks.

Lewerke made the best of what he had in front of him and took advantage of an elite corps of receivers. He was accurate from start to finish, for the most part, and completed 69 percent of his passes. He had a good game, but let’s pump the breaks here on the Heisman talk.

Yes, he’s arguably the most talented quarterback Mark Dantonio has ever had, but let’s wait for him to play a team like Michigan, Penn State or Ohio State.
