Michigan State Football: 5 takeaways from tight win over Utah State
1. Brian Lewerke made major improvements this offseason
After a strong first year as the full-time starter, Brian Lewerke needed to make some adjustments in the offseason to take that next step under center. One was his accuracy and the other major needed improvement was his down-field throwing ability.

Against Utah State, he looked like the best quarterback in the Big Ten. If there was an overwhelming bright spot for the Spartans on Friday, it was the junior quarterback.
In fact, he looked good with his down-field passing ability, hitting receivers on 20-plus yard passes, including the aforementioned beauty down the sidelines to Felton Davis III in the fourth quarter to essentially save the game for the Spartans.
Moreover, his accuracy was impressive. He completed 22-of-33 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns and if the staff let him air it out a bit more, he would have surpassed the 300-yard mark easily.
Not a bad day at the office for the second-year starter and it looks like he’s taken that next step for the green and white — eerily similar to Kirk Cousins and Connor Cook.
