2. Defensive backfield misses Josiah Scott

What a rough start it was for the Spartans’ defensive backfield. While the talent is there, it truly didn’t live up to its potential, allowing over 300 yards through the air.

Though the Spartans did pick off two passes — one coming from linebacker Joe Bachie — the secondary looked shaky and inconsistent all game long. While Jordan Love is a talented quarterback and deserves all the praise that comes his way, there’s no way this defense should have been as confused as it was on Friday night.

This secondary definitely misses Josiah Scott at cornerback and the sooner the team gets him back, the better shape the group will be.

Scott was a big reason for the Spartans’ turnaround last season in the defensive backfield, but the group looked like it was missing something — other than assignments — against Utah State.

An ugly start to the year for the ‘No Fly Zone’ 2.0.
