Michigan State football seems to be set at most positions heading into the 2018 season, but which five position battles should we be watching in fall camp?

Mark Dantonio and the Spartans have officially opened up fall camp with their first practice on Thursday afternoon following check-in day on Wednesday. Michigan State has major expectations for the upcoming season, which seems surreal given the fact that it finished 3-9 just two short years ago.

Heading into this season, though, the Spartans return one of the best quarterbacks in the country, a top running back in the conference, arguably the best receiving corps in the Big Ten, a top middle linebacker in college football and an elite secondary.

So where are all the position battles? Believe it or not, Michigan State has some raging battles to monitor closely this fall.

Keep an eye on these five position battles as fall ball rages on.

5. Offensive guard

The tackles seem to be set in stone, although Jordan Reid is making some noise, giving Cole Chewins and Luke Campbell a run for their money. However, the guard spots could be a rotation between three guys and it’ll be interesting to see who gets the nod as starters on Aug. 31.

The three clear choices are Tyler Higby, Kevin Jarvis and David Beedle. The former two look to be the favorites to start, but Beedle enters his senior season as one of the more reliable linemen on the team.

It may not seem like a heated battle, but the fight to earn starting snaps will be intense and it’ll all depend on which guy made the most progress this spring.

Higby and Jarvis may end up winning the two starting spots, after all, but don’t sleep on Beedle, or even redshirt freshman Matt Carrick.
