Michigan State basketball extended an offer to four-star power forward Drew Timme last week and he’s becoming a serious option for 2019.

It’s almost August and Tom Izzo is looking to land his first pledge in the 2019 class. The Hall of Fame head coach hasn’t had to wait this long in years past to scoop a commitment, but he’s been hitting the trail harder than he has in a while.

In fact, he’s been traveling to watch top targets in different states more often than not and it could pay off in the near future with a guy like four-star power forward Drew Timme.

The state of Texas’ fifth-best prospect landed an offer from Izzo and the Spartans on July 18 and called it a “big” one, per Sean Scherer of 247Sports.

It may be too early to tell if the Spartans are the favorites to land him, but he clearly thinks highly of Izzo and the program. Duke could be Michigan State’s biggest threat — go figure — at this point in time though the Blue Devils have yet to extend an offer.

Michigan State is still looking for that first pledge and Timme could be a good possibility given the mutual interest and need for a power forward, especially if Nick Ward declares following the 2018-19 season like everyone is expecting.

Timme is ranked the No. 49 player in the class and 12th-best power forward, per 247Sports. He’s been offered by the likes of Arizona, Florida, Louisville, Ohio State, Texas, USC, Virginia and Xavier.

Timme could be the perfect guy to stretch the floor for the Spartans. He has tremendous handles for a big, standing 6-9 and weighing in at 210 pounds, and isn’t afraid to bang with the bigs in the post.

The four-star is rising up the Spartans’ boards and it could end up being another Duke vs. Michigan State battle for the top recruit.
