Prior to the 2017 season, if I were to tell you one of the Dowell twins was going to break out on the defensive side of the ball, you’d probably assume it was Andrew Dowell, a multi-year starter at linebacker. Actually it was David Dowell who broke out during his redshirt sophomore season with a team-high five interceptions.

Moreover, he had 52 total tackles and four pass deflections leading to his first-team All-Big Ten selection by the media and an honorable mention honor from coaches in 2017. Yes, he seemed to impress just about everyone and the media saw him as an elite Big Ten defensive back.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety always seemed to be at the right place at the right time and had a couple of crucial interceptions against Michigan as well as Penn State in two upset wins. His big-play ability on the defensive side of the ball was part of the difference in those tight victories.

Dowell has a knack for making that big play and his focus is impressive. He locks in and reads opposing quarterbacks’ eyes well, keeping his hips loose enough to break and make a play on the ball.

Michigan State’s secondary is in good hands with three All-Big Ten talents, so far, on this list.
