1. Leadership

When you think of the best leaders under Mark Dantonio, guys like Kirk Cousins, Max Bullough, Greg Jones, Jack Allen, Brian Allen and Shilique Calhoun come to mind. Brian Lewerke may soon be joining that group.

Why isn’t Connor Cook listed there? There were plenty of rumors, but people took the fact he wasn’t named a captain and ran with it. He was still a great leader under center, but his time in East Lansing will always be remembered for the numbers he put up and not the leadership he brought to the table.

Lewerke commands the respect of his peers as well as the coaching staff. He’s a well-spoken kid who is just as good on the field as he is off it. He’s a role model for the younger players and could be named a captain for the upcoming 2018 season.

Not many juniors earn the captain role, but the Spartans could have two in 2018 — Joe Bachie included.

To be an all-time great, you have to also be a leader and Lewerke is just that. He could go down as the best quarterback Mark Dantonio has ever had and one of the best, if not the best, in school history.
