Romeo Weems, a four-star forward from New Haven, Mich., surprised everyone with a commitment to DePaul, so what’s next for Michigan State?

Now that everyone’s jaws have finally been scooped up off the floor following the Romeo Weems’ commitment to DePaul, we can finally digest what happened. Michigan State lost out on Weems despite looking like the favorite for some time, and everything changed in the final 24 hours before his announcement.

Weems has become the poster child for a potential DePaul resurgence, but it’ll take more than just him to turn that program around.

As for Michigan State, the Spartans are still looking for that first 2019 pledge. Missing out on a four-star do-it-all forward from his own backyard has to hurt, but Tom Izzo has his sights set on other top prospects in 2019.

Where do the Spartans go from here?

Look for Izzo to ratchet up the intensity with guys such as Vernon Carey Jr., Keion Brooks, Rocket Watts, Harold Beverly, Isaiah Stewart and Trayce Jackson-Davis. The top targets are likely Brooks, Carey Jr., Beverly and Watts, in that order, followed by Stewart and Jackson-Davis.

There’s no reason to panic about the class just yet. Yes, Weems was a ‘Plan A’ target, but the Spartans won’t have a wealth of scholarships available for the 2019 class. They will focus on Brooks, Carey Jr. and either Watts or Beverly to complete the class.
