Vernon Carey isn’t No. 1 on this list? While I believe he may be the most talented player in the class, I think there’s one player who Michigan State has a better chance with who would be a tougher miss.

The five-star power forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., looks like the nation’s No. 1 target, but he’s listed as the composite No. 2 overall prospect by 247Sports.

Carey stands 6-9 and weighs in at 245 pounds and he’d be an excellent replacement for Nick Ward, assuming he departs after next year or even this year. While I’m not comparing the two players because I believe Carey’s upside is top draft pick material, the two have similar frames and can bully opponents in the post.

The explosive big man also has a decent mid-range game and can handle the ball better than most bigs his size. He would be Tom Izzo’s highest-ranked recruit ever, but he has to duke it out with Duke, North Carolina, Miami and Kentucky.

Buckle up, this recruitment could be quite the ride.
