Michigan State basketball was hoping to land one of the top players in the 2019 class, but DePaul swooped in and stole Romeo Weems.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all in the recruiting world, the Romeo Weems recruitment comes along. Quiet for the entirety of the process before naming his top five schools less than a week before his commitment date, Weems seemed to be almost a lock to choose Michigan State.

Michigan State was hoping to kickstart its 2019 recruiting class with a Weems commitment on Tuesday evening, but the four-star recruit from New Haven, Mich., chose the DePaul Blue Demons over the Spartans, shocking just about everyone who had followed his recruitment until the past couple of days.

Weems sat at the table in his high school gym with the hats of each of his five finalists in front of him, some still holding out hope that he’d pick the Spartans, but he reached for the DePaul cap.

Claiming he made the decision that was best for him and his family, he stated he was taking his talents to DePaul.

Talking about dreams to play in the NBA and feeling as if DePaul gives him the best chance to do that, despite not having a player selected in the draft in over a decade, he believes the Blue Demons can get him to that next level.

Weems becomes one of the highest-rated commits DePaul has snagged and he showed that he wants to forge a different path to the NBA. It won’t be easy getting out of DePaul as one of the nation’s top prospects, but he has the talent. Is this the end of his commitment? Time will tell.
