3. Strong relationship with Tom Izzo, staff

Although he’s been getting a bad rap lately for not connecting with his players enough, Tom Izzo is a tireless recruiter who works hard to develop relationships with prospective Spartans. He’s even instilled that mindset to his staff as assistants Dwayne Stephens and Dane Fife also work hard to make recruits feel welcome.

Izzo is a hard-nosed coach when it comes to game time, but recruits know that. They realize what they’re signing up for when they commit to Michigan State, but most of the time, they break into the soft side of Izzo off the court. This happens during recruiting.

Romeo Weems is one of those recruits who has developed a strong bond with Izzo because of the countless in-home and in-school visits from the head coach. He has been to a number of Weems’ games and the two are in constant contact.

Somewhat similar to the familiarity of the Michigan State program and campus, Weems is comfortable with the staff and knows exactly what he’s getting in East Lansing.
